Lake Erie beats Crommelin for hoops title

Dominating play by 6-foot-5-inch center Seaman Erieck Ausbey helped USS Lake Erie (CG 73) get past USS Crommelin (FFG 37), 35-26, to capture the Afloat Intramural Basketball League championship at Naval Station Gym, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 8.

Earlier in the day, Lake Erie defeated USS Port Royal (GC 70), 48-27, in round one of the playoffs, before earning a hard-fought, 41-39, overtime win over USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) in the semi-finals to square off against Crommelin for the crown.

Forest City pools make big splash

The watery retreat is back. As promised, Forest City Residential Management has re-opened all six of the Forest City pools. The newly-maintained pools are located at: Radford Terrace, Halsey Terrace, Moanalua Terrace, Hokulani/Hale Moku, Pearl City Peninsula and McGrew Point.

Cavemen bounce back with clubbing of Security

Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) Bill Kronenberg worked his way out of two bases-loaded jams, while his teammates exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, as the Kunia Cavemen beat Security, 13-3, in an Ashore Intramural Softball League game at Millican Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 11.

By defeating Security, Kunia improved its league record to 7-1, while Security dropped its third game against six wins.

Steelers hold off Vikings to avenge loss

The Steelers built up a 21-point lead, then held off a frenzied fourth-quarter comeback by the Vikings to earn a 34-27 victory in a Pearl Harbor youth NFL Flag football league Midget Division (age 12-15) game at Quick Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 8.

Steelers quarterback Joshua Thompson tossed three touchdown passes, while his brother Jimmy ran for two scores, as the sibling tandem led their squad to a seven-point victory.

Boutiki Gift Shop donates $38,000 to community

The Boutiki Gift Shop at Joint-Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam donated more than $38,000 to 45 non-profit organizations in Hawaii during a ceremony at the shop April 9.

Donation checks were presented to help support the different organizations that are directly involved with the U.S. military in Hawaii.

NIOC wins in shootout over Port Royal

Undefeated Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii was held scoreless during regulation play, but in the end, the joint command was able to keep its winning streak going. NIOC overcame a tough effort by USS Port Royal (CG 73) to gain a 1-0 shootout win in overtime during an Intramural Soccer League game at Ward Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 1.
The win advanced NIOC's league-leading record to 7-0 while Port Royal fell to 3-3.

A strong defensive stand in the third period helped USS Lake Erie to a 46-40 victory over USS Chicago (SSN 721) in an Afloat Intramural Basketball League showdown at Naval Station Gym, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 1.
Down by a score of 26-24 at halftime, Lake Erie stepped up its man-to-man defense to hold Chicago shooters without a field goal in the third period to gain a 33-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

NIOC squeaks past SUBPAC in softball thriller

Air Force Staff Sgt. Pat Bulisco's clutch two-out single drove in the winning run as Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii edged Commander Submarine Force U.S. Pacific (COMSUBPAC), 7-6, in an Afloat Intramural Softball League game at Millican Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 4.
In gaining the one-run victory, NIOC improved its league record to 5-1, while handing the defending champion SUBPAC its first defeat of the season after winning five games in a row.

Pearl Harbor survivor and wife receive final honors

A scattering of ashes ceremony was held for 79-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor and former Boatswain's Mate Chief William "Buck" Buchan on April 27 at the USS Utah Memorial on Ford Island.
Buchan, who died on Oct. 11, 2000, was a 20-year-old coxswain for the USS West Virginia (BB-48) during the time of the 1941 Pearl Harbor attacks.
