Hard rock band Kilroy showcases musical talents of military musicians

For the past five months, the hard rock band Kilroy has been entertaining island audiences, with hopes of breaking into the Oahu music scene.

The band, which plays all original rock songs, is comprised primarily of active duty and former military service members, choosing to lend their musical talents after hours while juggling hectic work schedules or deployments.

Strong second half propels JIOC to high-flying victory

Joint Intelligence Operations Center (JIOC) outscored the "A" team from Navy Information Operations Command Hawaii (NIOC), 30-12, in the second half to turn a close game into a 59-39 victory during an Afloat Intramural League basketball game at Naval Station Gym, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on March 1.

The win improved JIOC's record to 6-1, only one game behind league-leader Naval Station Pearl Harbor (NAVSTA), while NIOC "A" lost for the third time in four tries.

Navy SEALS hoop it up over NIOC ‘B’

SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One (SDVT-1) burst out of the gates with an 11-0 lead and controlled the tempo for the rest of the game to defeat the "B" team from Navy Information Operations Command Hawaii (NIOC), 49-32, in an Ashore Intramural League basketball game at Naval Station Gym, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on March 1.

The SEALS improved their record to 2-3, while NIOC "B" dropped to 1-4 in league play.

Housing residents respond calmly to tsunami warnings

Forest City is thanking its residents for their calm response to the tsunami warning on Feb. 27, even as Hospital Point and Pacific Missile Range Facility ( PMRF), Barking Sands, Kauai were evacuated.

Navy, Marine Corps families romp in the swamp

More than 2,500 people, including approximately 180 U.S. Navy Sailors, participated in the 16th Annual Swamp Romp at Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe Bay on Feb. 20.

The Swamp Romp, a six-person team event, is a five-mile foot race that circles around MCBH. Participants negotiated several obstacles which required them to swing, crawl and jump through knee-high mud.

PSD announces new service provider

Starting March 1, Serco will be the new service provider for Pearl Harbor Personnel Support Department (PSD).

The company takes over the duties that were provided by Alutiig, which assisted active duty, retirees, civilians, family members, contractors and Department of Defense employees in obtaining their identification cards and common access cards (CAC).

Education tax credit helps pay college expenses

With the tax filing season now underway, a new educational tax credit can help parents and students offset part of the cost of the first four years of college. The American Opportunity Credit modifies the existing Hope credit for tax years 2009 and 2010, making it available to a broader range of taxpayers. Income guidelines are expanded and required course materials are added to the list of qualified expenses. Many of those eligible will qualify for the maximum annual credit of $2,500 per student.

Forest City makes successful transition with ‘hi email, bye tree-mail’

After a month long campaign, Forest City has made a successful transition to email-based communication with its housing residents. Already, Forest City has sent out several emails regarding issues that had an impact on residents, including radon detector removal from homes, speed bump improvements and on-base recycling. From now on, residents can expect to receive emergency notifications, notices, newsletters and event schedules from Forest City via email.

Pearl Harbor Lakers outshine Kaneohe Bay Suns

With only one week remaining before the playoffs, the Pearl Harbor Lakers showed why they might be the team to beat in the Termite Division (ages 8-10) playoffs by defeating the visiting Suns from Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe, 56-16, in a Hawaii Military Youth Athletic Association (HMYAA) basketball game at Bloch Arena Annex Gym, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on Feb. 13.

The HMYAA is an inter-base youth organization that includes teams from Pearl Harbor, Hickam Air Force Base and Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
