Naval Station beats Lake Erie in double OT

It was a game worthy of a championship matchup, but in the end, defending champion Naval Station Pearl Harbor's (NAVSTA) desire to repeat proved to be the difference as the team fought off upset-minded USS Lake Erie (CG 70), 46-43, in double overtime to earn the 2010 intramural basketball base title at Naval Station Gym, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 19.

USS Lake Erie (CG 70) scored two goals late in the second half to topple Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii, 2-1, in an Intramural Soccer League game at Ward Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 22.
NIOC started off the day in third place and was only one game behind We Fix Ships before suffering its second loss of the season - dropping its record to 7-2.
Big inning drives I'd Hit It past SDVT-1

I'd Hit It, a team comprised of players from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning enroute to a 9-2 win over SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One (SDVT-1) in an Ashore Intramural Softball League game at Millican Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, on May 25.
The victory raised I'd Hit It's league record to 6-4, while SDVT-1 saw its mark drop to 5-3.
Pearl Harbor historic sites will offer free admission to military families on Memorial Day

Admission to all Pearl Harbor historic sites will be free this Memorial Day, May 31, for active-duty, reserve, auxiliary and retired U.S. military personnel and their family members. This extends to all service branches — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard.

Military members and civilians commemorated a public celebration of life for victims of the West Loch disaster at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at the Puowaina (Punchbowl) Crater on May 21.
Hosted by the African-American Diversity Cultural Center Hawaii (AADCCH), the celebration honored the service members who lost their lives at the West Loch disaster 66 years ago on May 21, 1944.

Navy and Air Force leaders joined forces to participate in an orientation flight May 24 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam as Air Force pilots and loadmasters showed off the C-17's combat airlift capabilities.
The orientation flight was an opportunity for Air Force, Navy and Air National Guard leaders to get a better understanding of each other's needs and capabilities.
Rear Adm. Dixon Smith, commander of Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, said learning about other services is the key to providing support.

On Dec. 10, 2008, the family of Information Systems Technician Seaman Jonathon Mayen-Krogstad got the surprise of their life when their 20-year-old suddenly announced he was joining the U.S. Navy.
"At first my mom was really mad at me; she just couldn't believe I had joined," said Mayen-Krogstad, the oldest son of four children. "But as the time came closer for me to leave, she realized I was serious about this and how big a decision this was."

More than a thousand military service members paraded the length of Waikiki's Kalakaua Avene on May 22 at the highlighted event of this year's Military Appreciation Month.
Themed "Aloha to Our Military Ohana – Then and Now," the event was hosted by the United Services Organizations (USO) Hawaii, BAE Systems, TriWest Health Care Alliance and the City and County of Honolulu to honor all military active duty service members, Reservists, wounded warriors, military retirees and veterans.
